Reading
At Dunham children begin to enjoy reading from the very start of their journey with us by sharing enjoyment in hearing and talking about stories. In EYFS, Year 1 and 2 their ability to read is developed through our new decodable texts, pitched appropriately to the children's phonic coverage. This gives children the ability to independently read books matched to their level, providing success in reading. Then they also have a book which is a reading for pleasure book to share with family members as these can be read together or by the adult.
As children progress through the school, there are daily reading lessons, Literacy Leaf lessons, which specifically target different skills in reading such as inference or extending vocabulary. Our English curriculum is based around a carefully selected range of books to provide opportunities for children to read a wider more exciting range of books.
There is also a school library where children are able to go and read books they are interested in.
