A Look into our Class

Check back on this page regularly to keep updated with what's going on in Oak Class!

Maths

In maths, we split into year groups whenever possible with the help of Mrs Davies. This allows the children to have really focused maths groups to support their learning. In year 5 and 6, we use resources and manipulatives to help us visualise the numbers and to help us gain a deeper understanding of what they represent. We regularly have maths questions in our morning work to keep it fresh in our minds and we love a silly phrase or strange method to remember things. Ask us which triangle links to sausage and mash, or how to find the fraction of a number!

English

Our English lessons are split into Writing and Reading and happen regularly throughout the week. In Oak Class, we enjoy exploring themes within a text and looking at the author's writing style to inspire our own work. We are big on vocabulary in year 5 and 6, introducing new words to our working wall every single day! The children have their writing skills in their personal learning folders, and use these alongside resources around the room to help uplevel their writing. In our reading lessons, we like to work together and use group work and discussion to analyse a text. We regularly look at the target audience and talk about important themes, such as representation and diversity in literature.

Science

In science, we explore a wide variety of topics. The children are able to ask big questions, use scientific enquiry to carry out research, and explore different ways of presenting our findings. In Oak Class, we cover topics such as; evolution and inheritance; and Earth and space, which can lead to some really interesting discussions as a class. The children enjoy working together in groups to carry out research, and learning about different scientists linked to our topics!

Art

In Oak Class, the children take responsibility for the layout of their sketchbooks and are able to be creative with how they present their work. We always start with an artist study, where the children learn about the artist for that unit. We take inspiration from the colours and shapes used by that artist to design our title page, and then evaluate and compare their work. We base our annotations on colour theory, direct comparisons and analysing technique alongside our own personal opinion.

Design and Technology

Our DT lessons follow a design, make, evaluate format. We enjoy exploring products and items linked to our theme before we start the project. This allows us to focus on the target audience, work out our own personal preferences and discuss them together whilst also learning about technique and materials required. Oak Class have even carried out market research this year! When making pop-up books for children aged 5 and 6, the children interviewed members of Willow Class and showed them their initial design sketches to see what was popular amongst their target audience!
